Description
What Are Giri Badam?
Giri Badam are the pure almond kernels grown in the orchards of the Kashmir Valley — specifically in the high-altitude farms surrounding Srinagar, above 1,600 metres. In Kashmiri, Giri means kernel. These are among the most prized almonds in the world: naturally oilier, richer, and more aromatic than the commercial almonds sold across India.
Why Kashmiri Almonds Are Different
Commercial almonds available in India are largely Californian varieties grown at scale on flat, irrigated land. Kashmiri almonds grow slowly in mountain orchards where cold nights, mineral-rich soil, and the specific microclimate of the Kashmir Valley produce a fundamentally different nut. The oil content of Kashmiri Giri Badam is significantly higher — giving them a richer flavour, a softer bite, and a pronounced aroma that makes them distinct from the first taste.

Soak 5–8 Giri Badam overnight in cold water and eat in the morning — the traditional method, which improves nutrient absorption by reducing phytic acid. Eat raw as a snack. Add to kheer, sheer khurma, or halwa. Grind into a paste for traditional badam milk. Use in baking or as a topping for overnight oats.
